200,000 New Yorkers Eagerly Await Results for Section 8 Housing Assistance

In a major update impacting many New Yorkers, approximately 200,000 individuals have been selected for the city's Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waitlist.

These individuals were chosen from an overwhelming number of 633,808 applications, marking a significant step in addressing the city’s need for affordable housing solutions.

The Section 8 program, which is federally funded, provides vital rental assistance to low-income families, allowing them to find suitable housing in the private market.

In the latest effort to support those in need, city officials have begun the process of notifying the selected applicants, a task that will unfold via email this week and will continue with mailed notifications.

New York City opened applications for this program in June for the first time since 2009, illustrating the high demand for affordable living options. Officials are currently working towards issuing more than 210,000 vouchers, with last year’s distribution figure standing at just over 7,500.

Looking forward, Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer announced that the distribution rate will increase to about 1,000 vouchers each month.

There’s a palpable urgency for affordable living spaces, which was underscored by Mayor Eric Adams stating, "The message is clear: New Yorkers need affordable housing, and they need it now.”

The flood of applications within a single week—and nearly half within the first 24 hours—reveals the intensity of the current housing concerns.

The waitlist reopening is a momentous occasion, bringing relief to many. NYCHA’s Chief Executive Officer, Lisa Bova-Hiatt, expressed a sense of accomplishment in commencing the distribution of new vouchers after dealing extensively with the previous waitlist over the past 15 years.

To be eligible for the program, applicants must earn less than 50 percent of the area median income, which equates to about $69,900 yearly for a household of three or $54,350 for an individual resident.

At present, NYCHA is unable to provide an estimate for when applicants will be reached on the waitlist for the HCV program. For more detailed information about the HCV program, hopeful individuals can visit NYCHA’s official website.

As New York City makes strides towards enhancing the lives of its residents through housing assistance, those on the waitlist are one step closer to finding a place to call home.
