Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) provides critical support, though deposit dates vary by state.

Unlike federal programs with uniform payout dates, TANF is federally funded but managed individually by each state. Because local agencies set their own rules, issuance schedules differ depending on where you live.
 

State-by-State Payment Windows

• September 1: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and Washington, D.C.
• September 1–3: California (CalWORKs), Texas (staggered by Eligibility Determination Group number), and Florida (processed within the first 3 business days).
• September 1–5: Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, and Washington.
• September 1–15: New York and Ohio.
• September 2–27: Pennsylvania.
• September 3–27: North Carolina.

 

Why Deposit Dates Differ

If your state uses a multi-day window, your specific payment date often depends on identifiers like your case number or last digit of your ID.

Delivery methods—such as Direct Deposit, Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards, or paper checks—can also impact how quickly funds clear.
 

Holiday and Weekend Adjustments

With Labor Day occurring on Monday, September 7, 2026, banks and government offices will be closed.

If your regular payment falls on a holiday or weekend, your state agency may issue funds on the preceding business day.
 

Steps to Take if Benefits Are Delayed

First, check your state’s online client portal or call the customer service number on your EBT card to review active case status.

Be sure to verify that all required recertifications and work requirement documents have been submitted on time.
