During the groundbreaking ceremony, Tucson Mayor Regina Romero celebrated the initiative, stating that Amazon Flats will provide secure, long-term homes that will positively change many lives. She acknowledged the support from Governor Katie Hobbs and the Arizona Department of Housing.
The project became possible thanks to a $6.1 million grant from the federal American Recovery Plan Act, which helped the city buy the motel and start fixing it up. There’s also a second phase in the planning that will add more than 50 additional living spaces.
Old Pueblo Community Services is also involved, ensuring those who were previously homeless will get the help they need to stay in their new homes.
Ann Chanecka, who leads Tucson’s Housing and Community Development Department, said this project is just one of the many ways they’re tackling the city’s housing crisis. They aim to build safe and affordable homes that look good and meet the needs of their community.
This project aligns with Tucson’s bigger goal to make living conditions better for people who are most in need. The initiative is a crucial step in supporting vulnerable communities by providing them with housing that is not only accessible but also welcoming.
This transformation reflects the city's commitment to improving lives through thoughtful urban redevelopment and support systems.
