Long Beach Offers New Rent Subsidies for Older Adults: How to Apply
The City of Long Beach has launched the Older Adult Shallow Subsidy program to help low-income seniors pay their rent and avoid losing their homes. Eligible residents can receive $400 to $500 per month in rental assistance, up to a total of $12,000 over two years.
The program acts as a temporary bridge while participants connect with permanent housing solutions, such as long-term affordable housing options.
Who Is Eligible?
To qualify for the program, households must meet the following criteria:
- Age: At least one person in the household must be 62 or older (or 55 or older with a disability).
- Location: You must live in non-subsidized rental housing within Long Beach.
- Income Limit: Household income must be at or below 50% of the Area Median Income (for example, up to $58,300 for a single person or up to $110,000 for a family of eight).
- Rent Burden: You must spend 70% or more of your monthly income on rent.
- Financial Sustainability: You must show that receiving this partial subsidy will allow you to consistently make your rent payments.
Priority Applicants
Applications are prioritized for households in high-need situations, including:
- Those whose current rental aid or housing voucher is expiring within 60 days.
- Individuals facing an immediate risk of eviction.
- Seniors living on a fixed income or with disabling conditions.
- Those with a history of homelessness.
How to Apply
Applications are open and available in English, Spanish, Khmer, and Tagalog. They will remain open until all available funding spots are filled.
- Online: Submit your application on the official City of Long Beach Website.
- In-Person:
- Multi-Service Center: Monday through Thursday.
- Long Beach Senior Center: Mondays and Wednesdays.
Additional Support
Participants in the program receive more than financial help—they will also get light-touch case management, which includes quarterly check-ins and connections to other local support services.
The program is backed by $1.8 million in funding from state grants, Los Angeles County Measure A sales tax, and state funding.
