What You Need to Know About Section 8 Housing Benefits During the Government Shutdown

Some states are trying to find ways to cover gaps in programs that help with food and child care during the shutdown.
For example, funding for federal SNAP (food stamps) and some Head Start preschool programs is set to run out soon. Aid for new mothers through a program called WIC might stop the following week if the shutdown continues.
How the Shutdown Could Affect Housing Assistance:
- The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program helps low-income families, seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities pay for housing.
- Section 8 help will continue at least until the middle of November 2025.
- If the government shutdown lasts longer than that, new housing vouchers will not be given out, and it may not be possible to renew current leases.
- There will be no new inspections or new applications for assistance while the government is shut down.
- People who already get Section 8 help must still pay their portion of rent during the shutdown.
In summary, Section 8 housing support will continue for now, but if the government shutdown does not end soon, future support could be at risk.
